IVOA Interoperability Meeting – Fall 2013

The International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA) will hold its semi-annual Interoperability Workshop just prior to the ADASS Conference, in the same hotel. The IVOA “Interop” workshops provide a semi-annual venue for discussion and development of virtual observatory standards and VO-based applications, and are open to those with an interest in utilizing the VO infrastructure and tools in support of observatory operations and/or astronomical research. ADASS participants are welcome to extend their Hawaiian sojourn a few days and learn what the VO has to offer.

The VAO and IVOA recognize a generous contribution from Microsoft Research in support of the Waikoloa Interop meeting.

The Interop program is managed on the IVOA wiki.

The meeting will be held at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort on the sunny Kona coast of the Big Island of Hawai’i. General information about the hotel and all the services and activities it provides can be found at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott website.

A room block has been reserved at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott for the nights of Wednesday September 25 through Friday September 27. The room rate is $169/night plus tax, which includes free self-parking and in-room Internet. Reservations must be made no later than August 26, 2013. We recommend that you use the hotel booking link to make your reservations:

You can also call Marriott reservations at 1-506-474-2009 or 1-800-266-9432 and mention “IVOA”, however, this is a general number for all Marriott reservations so it might be best to use the web form.

We recommend that you book early. We have a room block of limited size, but if we were to reach the room limit early it is likely that we could extend it. If we run out of rooms in our block on August 26 it is unlikely that more rooms would be available.

If you are planning to attend both the Interop meeting and the ADASS Conference, please read on!

If you are planning to attend both the IVOA Interop meeting AND the ADASS Conference, it is VERY IMPORTANT that you book your rooms for the meetings separately. That is, book the nights of Sept 25-27 or 25-28 from the IVOA booking link, and the nights of Sept 28-Oct 3 or Sept 29-Oct 3 from the ADASS booking link. We have been assured that you will not have to change rooms! But this is the only way the hotel can assure that room-night revenues are allocated to the two separate contracts. The IVOA rate is a bit more expensive than the ADASS rate, but this rate provides the IVOA with complimentary meeting space.

Both contracts allow you to add three nights prior and after the event at the conference rate IF rooms are available. Since the ADASS rate is lower, you might be tempted to just book at that rate a few extra days early. PLEASE DON’T DO THIS as it will likely result in our failing to meet our contract obligations with a serious cost impact for VAO.

As public transportation is not available on the island, travelers are referred to the ADASS page on local transportation. If you’re looking to share a cab from Kona or to return, you can also sign up on the ADASS Rideshare Wiki.

Coffee breaks within the meeting schedule are catered, but participants are on their own for lunch and dinner. There is a list of dining options within the resort here, and they also list some off-resort restaurants here. Even more dining options are viewable on this Google Map.
